Marcus was not phased by this outburst and watched Alex leave. He looked again at her father "Yes sir I do know that I was not given the right to court her but..." He paused a moment chossing his words carefully. He then looked at him evenly "But I unlike the other men here wish to marry your daughter out of love not because I want her money." He then bit the inside of his lip softly then looked at him " But I Marcus Nightrider do wish to marry your daughter and if you refuse then I shall leave where I stand before you and you shall never see nor here from me again." He then closed his mouth and awaited the anger that was sure to come from Alex's father.

Once outside Alex nearly collapsed onto one of the garden benches. Her two friends then stood in front of her, listening to her sobbed words. " He was truly wonderful, I know that we all agreed to swear off men but, I couldn't help it, he was always there when I was riding or if I was out walking somewhere. Then when he spoke, oh you were right. I should never have had anything to do with him, or any man for that matter! " she said a bit roughly. Her friends just shook her head at her. " Alex stop that this instant. We all know about the oath that we took, but that as at the beginning of our lives, we had just met each other at school and we had never even met a man! Do not feel guilty for falling for a man such as that Alex, he may be a bit rash but I can tell you here and now that he loves you. " the girl said while the other nodded, none knew what was going on inside though.
Fredrick was furious, his mouth stood agape for long moments while he shook his finger at the man standing before him. He wanted to yell out taunts at the boy and send him packing out as quickly as his face had turned red. But something stopped him, a gentle hand was placed on his arm. His wife of all people stood at his side. She turned to Marcus with a smile, " Mr. Nightrider, you have spoken very eloquently here before out guests. Though the occasion does not call for such a speech I must thank you. Though my husband does not wish to acknowledge you kindly but I will. For not only was your speech very eloquent but it was also very similar to one heard years ago, on this very floor. " she then turned to Fredrick who had turned from his bright red to almost a stark white. " Yes, Fredrick you remember don't you? You stood almost where he is now and asked my father for my hand in marriage on I believe Christmas. " with that the entire crowd burst into not so silent whispers. Fredrick as then forced to address them all, " So that may be! Boy you will have one month! One month only! To try to prove to me that you are worth the hand of my daughter." he said.
